Nature itself is the primary recreational resource of the
Sonoma Coast and can be enjoyed from almost any location at any time of year. Not
surprisingly, people who live here love outdoor activities ranging from quiet observation
of nature to challenging its extremes. Nearby state and county parks offer plentiful
opportunities for beachcombing, tide-pooling, hiking, biking and horseback riding. The
ocean and bay waters attract sport fishermen, clam diggers, abalone divers, surfers,
sailors and windsurfers. The waters are too cold for swimming, though, and beachcombers
are warned against getting too close to the treacherous surf.
The abundant wildlife draws birdwatchers,
whale watchers, seal watchers and tide-poolers from far and near. The coastal area is home to more than
200 varieties of birds, and large harbor seal and sea lion colonies. Gray whales pass by
along the coastline on their twice yearly migration in January/February and April/May.
Golfers find the 18 hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed
course at Bodega Harbour both challenging and of exceptional beauty. While the golf course
is open to the public, the other recreational facilities at Bodega Harbour for tennis and
swimming are reserved for residents.
A short
drive away, the Russian River offers a dramatically different environment as
you leave the coast and drive along the river through the giant redwood
groves. Primarily a summer recreation area, the Russian River area offers
boating, winery touring, shopping, canoeing and swimming.
